How Often Should You Paint the Exterior of Your Home in Hawaiʻi?

If your home’s exterior still looks good, you may wonder when it actually needs another coat of paint. A useful planning window is about every 5–10 years, but the condition of the paint matters more than the calendar. Sherwin-Williams gives a general exterior repainting range of 7–10 years; for a Hawaiʻi home exposed to strong sun, coastal salt, or frequent rain, it makes sense to start inspecting sooner.

Why Does the Timing Vary?

Even homes on the same island can face different conditions. Hawaiʻi’s rainfall changes considerably over short distances, so a windward home may encounter more moisture than one in a drier area. Coastal salt deposits can also affect exterior paint and the surface beneath it. Paint quality, the previous preparation work, and the material being painted all influence how well the finish holds up.

That means your siding, stucco, and trim may not all need attention at the same time. A wall that gets direct afternoon sun or a section exposed to wind-driven rain may show wear first.

What Are Some Signs It May Be Time to Repaint?

Walk around your home and look for peeling or cracking paint, noticeable fading, and a heavy chalky residue that rubs off on your hand. Check caulk around joints, windows, and openings, too. Peeling can be a sign that moisture is reaching the surface, so it’s important to address the cause before applying new paint.

If the finish is mostly sound, cleaning and targeted maintenance may be enough for now. If wear is widespread, an exterior repaint can refresh the appearance of your home and help protect its surfaces. Thorough cleaning, repairs, and preparation are key parts of that decision and the work that follows.
